Double up this winter: denim on denim

DENIM 10

WHETHER your preference in jeans is a wide leg, skinnies, flares, a
high waist, or anything else on offer, the world, it seems, will never tire of denim. It’s one of the most versatile fabrics available and a permanent feature for all seasons. Once a faux pas, even the doubledenim trend – often referred to as a Canadian tuxedo – has been seen on celebrity trendsetters like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Kate Bosworth and Jennifer Lopez.

DENIM 2This winter you’re going to have many denim options to choose from, but putting the double-denim look together can be risky business. Here is how to rock denim-on-denim this winter without veering into rodeo territory.

Double-Denim Dos and Don’ts

1. The old school classic dungaree is back with a vengeance:  Do dress them up by pairing them with a pair of heels or dress down withsneakers or combat boots. The key to transforming dungarees is to pair them with dressy pieces for a night out, such as a glitzy clutch and sparkly accessories.

* Do keep it chic and casual with a slim-fitting top or denim shirt. The trick is not to look like a farmer after a hard
day’s work.

* Don’t wear a tight dungaree that clings around your thighs. Rather get one size bigger than your normal size to get
that loose-fitting look.

2. Do finish your denim-on-denim look with a fringe bag or backpack.

3. Do cover up with a woollen beanie or get creative by wearing a scarf on your head in different ways. The winter months can be chilly.

4. Do mix up different shades of denim. Darker washes of denim will create a slimming effect, while lighter shades will draw attention to the areas you want to highlight.

It’s all about knowing your body. Remember, mixing is best. When it’s all in one shade, head to toe, denim can look dull.

5. Don’t wear denim accessories such as a denim handbag, hat or shoes. It may be tempting, but you are not a denim Christmas tree.

Do keep it simple by wearing earring studs or something similar
that won’t draw the attention away from your outfit.

6. If you are not yet ready to brave the denim-on-denim trend, do fake the look by mixing signature pieces such as a denim dress, which you can dress up and down, or a dark blue denim shirt with casual pants or a skirt.
